Greyfriars Bobby

We spent much of the day visiting Edinburgh Castle, but for my blip I have this shot of the statue of Greyfriars Bobby, the Skye terrier that was said to have maintained a 14 year vigil by the graveside of his owner.

I don't believe it for a second, but it is such a heart-warming story and he is such a lovely looking dog he simply had to be my blip.

The story goes that Bobby was owned by a policeman and night watchman, John Gray who died and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard in 1858. The grief- stricken dog remained by the graveside until his death in 1872. Initially, the graveyard keeper tried to evict him, but later relented and built a shelter for him.
