43924 - Oxenhope

SUNDAY

I did a few jobs this morning and late afternoon headed over to Hebden Bridge for a 5 km walk around Hardcastle Crags.  We knew that it was far too late in the day for the cafe at Gibson Mill to be open, so our flask of tea and chocolate biscuits were very welcome. The rain held off, there were plenty of spaces in the car park and most people had gone home so the woodland and riverside paths were quiet - exactly as I like it.

After the walk, we drove over to Oxenhope Station with the hope of seeing the last train of the day on the Keighley and Worth Valley line.  Over the weekend, the railway has been running a three day " steam and diesel extravaganza" so trains were running later into the evening than on a normal Sunday. I couldn't have timed it any better as a double-headed set arrived the minute I set foot on the platform.

The main photo shows the former Midland Railway locomotive 3924 which was built in Derby in 1920. In 1965 it was consigned to the scrapyard but eventually rescued in 1970 by a group of enthusiasts.

The extra shows Gibson Mill at Hardcastle Crags.

We finished off the day with a fish and chip supper from Catch Seafood at West Vale.
