The Bell

For the first time in many months we visited, after a short field walk, The Bell in Gumley. The landlord of many years has taken the opportunity provided by lockdowns to call it a day and retire. It's still owned by the Gumley Hall Estate and a new 'gaffer ' is in place. He is, we're told, fussy about his beer and not averse to sending any duff barrel back. Indeed. my pint of Woodford Wherry was very well kept.

From the extras you can see first of all that the pub, like so many, is crying out for staff.  Secondly, that the village suffers from the ubiquitous modern  curse and blessing of the motor car. Further on, when we walk up the hill towards the church, it is in places impossible to walk on the pavement and we're forced to walk in the road. A pity really but we can't complain as we did drive here today!
