Røros

Røros has a long history, and most of it is to do with copper mining. In the 1600’s there was already a mine here and the company that owned it got a license from the state to take over a circular area, 100 km diameter, with their mine at the centre. They could use anything they needed in that area to get the copper out of the ground, including the people who lived there! They did have to pay them fair wages so it wasn’t quite serfdom, and the locals may well have been happy to work and earn some money, but it still seems a hard deal.
Jan (HarlingDarling) has written all about our day so I hope you follow us both, because I’m not going to write it all again!
In my blip you see the old town, part of a world heritage centre, and we are standing on that obvious tourist icon, the slag heaps from the smelting works!!!
This evening we are on our way back to Sweden, and have stopped next to a lake, in a small clearing in the woods. Two fireplaces indicate it’s used by fishermen who grill their catch here, but it’s raining and dark so hopefully the fishermen will stay home tonight.
