Palm Sunday

Mexican tradition is filled with equal parts religion and partying! Many Mexicans come from Mexico City, and other towns to San Miguel, for the celebration of Santa Semana, or Holy Week. Hotels are full, and restaurants enjoy the huge influx of business. In the morning on Palm Sunday, there are many sombre processions marking Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, leading up ultimately his crucifixion. Streets and homes are decorated with palms and flowers. Intricate crosses and flowers, made from palms which have been blessed by the priests, are for sale in front of the Parroquia. In the afternoon, the center square takes on more of a carnival atmosphere, with balloon sellers, an abundance of food carts, and hundreds of families with their children enjoying the day.
