Suvanto village

Today was the last day of our Lapland tour and we drove to Suvanto village, which building dates mostly from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Village has been spared the devastation of the wars and much of the post-war new construction. Currently, the village has 17 houses inhabited all year round.

In the 1980s, the villagers received financial support from the Ministry of the Environment and expert assistance from the National Board of Antiquities for the renovation of the culturally and architecturally valuable village.

The village was chosen as the most beautiful village in Lapland in 1987. It has also received the international Europa Nostra Award in 1991 in recognition of the preservation of a unique cultural and building environment.

We were lucky and also got to meet the local cafe owner at her cafe, which has originally been her birthplace. The house was built in the early 19th century and decorated in the old style. Even the cafe was already closed after the summer, she asked if we would like to enjoy coffee and  cloudberry-cream cake with her. Cake was one of the best I ever enjoyed.

In the extra is one photo of the cafe and a yard.
