Stuff and Nonsense

Bar Tailed Godwit #88/Oystercatcher #89

Our plan today was to get out earlyish as the rain was forecast to come at around 1 o'clock. We arrived at Low Newton before 10 and had a walk along the beach taking in some nice birds, but at 10.55am, the rain came and we headed for The Ship Inn. It's the only place for shelter nearby and opens at 11. There was already a queue but there was also plenty of inside seating and a welcoming log fire. We had a hot drink and then decided upon an early lunch as the menu looked very nice.
The rain passed over and it seemed to brighten up a little so we walked to the hide at the back of the sand dunes and sat and watched the gaggle of geese and ducks for a while. Since the clouds were looking decidedly black we made it back to the car and headed home. Once again there were no purple sandpipers, which I didn't really expect to find there, but there were also no sanderlings either which surprised me. We will try again tomorrow morning if the rain has gone by then, which it is supposed to.
So, today's blip is of a lovely black and white oystercatcher and what I am pretty sure is a bar-tailed godwit. Godwits are not so easy to tell apart as far as I'm concerned anyway, but the very slightly upturned beak, stripe above the eye and the more speckled back are leading me to think it's a bar tailed and not a black tailed godwit. So, two for the price of one today as I've not yet blipped either of these this year.
