Maze

Gollum had his Nose Work class tonight and the theme was "inaccessible" versus "accessible" hides.

First we had 6 hides, where we had to look at our dogs, when they indicated and decide whether we thought it was an accessible or an inaccessible hide they had found. This is important at trials - if the judge asks where the hide is, we need to be able to tell if the dog has indicated directly on the hide or just told us that "it is in this area and I can't come closer than this". I got 5 out of 6 correct, which was very good.

The next 2 searches were in the center of a maze. The purpose of this was to teach the dog not to assume the hide is inaccessible before it has tried all possible ways in. Again this is important at trials to prevent false indications because the dog gives up too soon. Again Gollum nailed it. He is such a good boy.

My picture is a Labrador with his nose on the hide at the end of a maze search. The handler is ready to reward and the instructor is filming.

See you tomorrow
