Progress

The arrival of high speed fibre internet.

For a year or two now high speed fibre has brought the internet to a green box at the end of our road. From there it
has still had to come to the individual houses via old fashioned copper telephone wires.

Now we are all being brough right up to date with the fibre coming right into our houses.

To achieve this involves burying a pipe up our road and then pulling the fibre through it.

In my childhood two men with pickaxes would have come to dig the trench.

Fifty years ago a worker with a noisy pneumatic drill and a shovel would have arrived.

Tofay we have a hugely expensive machine which cuts the trench and scoops out the earth very quickly. I think it even has a detector
at the front which warns of buried pipes and wires.

The Internet is a wonderful thing and I use it several hours every day.

But is there anyone else who sometimes, as I do, occasionally thinks that with the abuses of social media, the pornography, the dangers to childfren, the scams and ransomes, that society might be better off without it.

Certainly huge changes are going to have to be made to keep it under control.
