Tongland Hydro Power Station

Tongland Power Station was built in 1936 by Merz and McLellan, and Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners, engineers, and is the lowest and largest such station in the Galloway Hydro-Electric Scheme.

Merz and McLellan was one of the leading British Electrical Engineering Consultancies, based in Newcastle and was instrumental in designing the UK's first three-phase electrical supply network on Tyneside.  For the next century it continued to advise other Commonwealth countries such as New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners was a British firm of consulting civil engineers based in London and founded in 1922 by the noted Scottish Civil Engineer, Brigadier-General Sir Alexander Gibb.  During the 1930s, under the direction of Hugh Beaver, the firm brought together architecture and mechanical services with the focus on heavy civil engineering.  Thus it was able to offer to industrial clients a complete service.
