Sandy spit

Macaneta is sort of an island, connected to the mainland by a bridge built in recent years. Before it was hastily constructed over the Incomati River there was apparently a tragedy with the informal roll on / roll off boat crossing in which two 4x4s and the two families occupying them drowned.

Macaneta is on a sandy peninsula that ends in a long spit of beach separating the Indian Ocean from lagoons and meanders of the Incomati. I am staying in basic lodgings close to where the spit begins, and today did a long walk along the sand. It’s always quiet on Macaneta beach even on weekends, with the most notable activity being grey herons guarding the shoreline, and the occasional family group on a day trip, complete with aggressive dog. I arrived at another lodge a few kilometres away, where I fuelled up for the return walk. It was a relaxing day and I can feel the workload stresses lifting nicely.
