Ditch

Back Blip - major catch-up in progress and Blipgaps being filled

Leading an evening walk with Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Ramblers.

From the Falkirk Wheel we walked through Roughcastle Community Woodland to reach Rough Castle itself (pictured). Down into Bonnybridge from there, then up to the Forth and Clyde Canal which we followed back to the Wheel and the car park.

It stayed dry, but it was a bit chilly. Autumn approaches.

Rough Castle is the site of a Roman Fort along the Antonine Wall. The Wall consisted of a ditch, on the south (i.e. Roman Empire) side of which was built a wooden palisade with lookout posts. At the bottom of the ditch were placed small stones and rocks, covered with grass and leaves, etc. 'Ankle-breakers' for any unsuspecting Picts who had made it that far and had avoided the other traps on their side of the Wall.
