Old Military Road

We've had a lovely day today.

We had a slow start at Fort Augustus as so many people were coming down the locks that we were late getting up.  All went smoothly however (with 5 chambers this is the longest set of locks we go through) and we were soon on our way.

We stopped at Loch Oich for some lunch and a 10km cycle.  Our ride took us on an Old Military Road (General Wade era) which was later used as a railway line, along the south shore of the loch (pictured).  We enjoyed seeing the old Bridge of Oich, which is now restored and open to pedestrians (see extra).  We also rather enjoyed a long shallow weir which the towpath fords (see other extra) - fun on bikes!

Next we cruised through Loch Oich which we thought was beautiful.  Our final section of canal for the day was called Laggan Avenue due to the trees lining both banks and with the autumn colours it was spectacular.  We loved it.

We got through Laggan locks and moored for the night at the end of Loch Lochy with a fabulous view.  We all had showers at the facilities here, then MrsCyclops made us curry (butter chicken) for dinner.  A delicious end to the day.
