Day 6 - Fowey

Day 6 of our A - Z alphabet challenge - F.

It was a lovely sunny morning when we set off from St Ives, so we thought we'd carry on exploring Cornwall and do todays letter 'F'. We drove best part of 50 miles to the South East coast of Cornwall to Fowey (that's pronounced Foy by the way!) It is a small town at the mouth of the River Fowey.

The weather wasn't as nice as when we left St Ives, but it was warmer than our last few outings. We parked at the car park at the top of the hill and decided to take a wander along to Ready Money Cove and along to St Catherine's Castle - where todays picture comes from. It was quite a climb up to the remains of the Castle, but the view was worth while when we got up there. The picture doesn't do it justice! It is a small harbour defence castle built as part of Henry VIII's south coast fortifications in the late 1530's. It has been well used over the centuaries.

From here we headed back into the town and has a quick wander around it's selection of shops before we headed into the The Galleon Inn for a spot of lunch.
The Galleon was down by the water front and provided a perfect view of the river while we relaxed and enjoyed stuffing our faces with pizza. On a summers day this place must get packed. It's a lovely freehouse pub with 2 bars and 2 outside areas. Just outside there you can take a trip across the river or if you fancy driving yourself, there are boats that can be hired.

After lunch we wandered further through the lanes with their selection of shops -some high street shops such as Boots, some local chains and many individual traders selling a variety of items. From here we carried along the front until we reached the Caffa Mill Pill vehicle ferry which takes you across to Bodinnick. If we had had more time to explore, we probably would of crossed the river to explore the other side. This may have to wait until later in the year. I definately want to come back to Fowey to explore more.

From here, we headed back up the steep hill to the car park (god knows why we picked the top one!) On our way we passed a heritage sign with a few local facts on. Did you know that on 17th August 1644, Charles 1st was shot at from Fowey while walking on Hall Walk. There were loads of other interesting facts about the town but this is the only one I remembered.

Fowey is well worth a visit, and we will be back!
