Bellbird Bait

I was upset when I found the resident bellbird dead in the grass. His song was so special to me. However, the kowhai flowers (bellbird favourites) were opening and I hoped others would be attracted. It wasn’t long before another male began to visit. He is not as bold as the old one, and he has not discovered the waxeyes’ sugar water, but he produces lovely notes. The other day I also heard a female, but it was only once.

These flowers are on the second kowhai tree to bloom. I hope the bellbird stays when the flowers are finished.
