Quod oculus meus videt

White Edge Trees

Another day of walking, this time with R and an opportunity to visit the Peak District. Our plan was to complete the walk before the rain came in from the south west.  What we hadn’t bargained on was the cloud ceiling, which for parts of the drive up meant we were driving through thick fog.

We started from Baslow, climbing up onto Baslow Edge before continuing onto Big Moor and White Edge.  Visibility was variable, sometimes just a few metres, at other times a few hundred metres. It was eerie, made more so by the regular raw of red deer stags in the distance.  We were sure that at least 5 stags were calling, but in all of the walk we only saw three hinds and one stag.

By the time we reached the far point of the walk, by the Grouse Inn, it had begun to spit with rain.  We carried on, walking above the Derwent Valley, along Froggat, Curbar and Baslow Edges.  We were surprised by the number of people walking along the route, including many people in appropriate clothing for the weather.  They were going to be thoroughly soaked by the time they got back.

It was great to be out, despite the conditions.
