Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A railway mystery.

This old timber building in the village of Braemar was the office of the Great North of Scotland  Railway Company. Strange really since there was never a railway line to Braemar! The original plan had been for a line from Aberdeen along the Dee valley all the way to Braemar. However, Queen Victoria, worried that the line would disturb her holidays at Balmoral, vetoed the idea and the line terminated at Ballater. The railway company therefore ran a bus service from Ballater to Braemar and this fine old building served as office, garage and waiting room for the buses.
