Sgwarnog: In the Field

Cinema

We were back inside a cinema for the first time in eighteen months, as a half-term treat for 14yo, 17yo and myself. We opted for the wide open spaces of the multiplex over the boutique option, and ended up being three of about fifteen souls in a 250+ seat theatre.

We selected Dune, which I’d been keen to see having first read Frank Herbert’s original trilogy of novels forty years ago. Dune was one of the first great ecologically driven approaches to worldbuilding, and we need stories of this nature out in the mainstream now more than ever. Layer that with a narrative around colonialism and power and you have a very serious movie hiding within a blockbuster, science fiction epic.

It’s a shame we have to wait two years for the second instalment, but I may well be digging out the books for a long overdue reread.
