The Hopetoun monument is the second most prominent man made structure in East Lothian. It stands on top of a hill just to the north of Haddington. You can climb a stone spiral staircase that feels like it's crumbling beneath your feet, through pools of complete darkness, up the centre of the tower to the top. The views from the top of the tower reward the climb.

Me and the boys climbed it this morning for two reasons: 1) to show Charlie whether a lego figure would be destroyed by the fall, and 2) to fly a toy aeroplane from it.
