Stuff and Nonsense

Short eared Owl #111

This afternoon we were back on the Wirral coast looking for owls as the sun was out and the wind was light.
Since we didn't see the short eared owls last time at Parkgate, this time we went a bit further up the river towards Burton Mere and parked at The Harp Inn at Denhall Quay. It's the first time we've been there so were not sure what to expect. There were already a few people dotted around the marsh so we just headed out on one of the paths towards a man with a camera sitting on a tussock!
We soon passed him as we saw our first shortie of the year. This was it - quite distant and shooting into the sun I was amazed that it actually looked OK. We waited a few minutes but it didn't come back up again so we moved on in search of more owls and better light.
We found both, but the owls were quite distant. There were at least three more individuals, two fighting with each other and another one being mobbed by crows(extra). They were great to watch even if the shots I took weren't too good. So now we know where to go to see the shorties this year if there is any decent weather in the coming weeks.
