Whixall Moss

Today F and I went to Whixall Moss for a walk round.  Unfortunately the road was closed and we had a VERY long diversion to get there.

The sun shone but it was very cold and not weather to stand around in.  We saw a couple of reed buntings, long-tailed tits and a flock of mixed thrushes but everything was behind twigs or leaves so there were no good photos.

We saw the warden on his rounds and he had seen a hen harrier after standing on the viewing tower for four hours.  That's real dedication!

I chose this photo as I thought that it gave the savannah-like atmosphere of the moss although it couldn't convey how cold it was!

On the way back we stopped to watch a murmuration of small groups of starlings, they're always a pleasure to see.  Luckily the road had reopened so we had a shorter trip back.
