One of the Run-aways

When I drove my car onto the front lawn there was one of the starling chicks, more interested in what its poor frazzled parent was doing than to be alarmed by the car. I carefully opened the door a crack and poked the camera through it for this shot.

This has been a very anxious time for the parents. Normally they fledge all their chicks at once and take them well away somewhere in the countryside. I rarely see a juvenile. If one returns it is chased away by the adults. Having unfledged chicks on the ground in what they obviously regard as an unsafe place is so stressful.
