Half a conversation overheard

Yes, she's being thrown out of the house by [family member]. He doesn't want her to live there any more.
...
No, she thinks her husband was killed by the Taliban. 
...
And understandably she's very upset that her children are still in Afghanistan. 

It wasn't so much the content that distressed me as the matter-of fact tone of voice, as if these anecdotes are relayed several times a day. 

Because they are.
