An impossibility of distance away

The wedding having been cancelled repeatedly for two years, and the rearranged event next April looking ever less likely, our son and daughter in law just went and did it, only telling us afterwards once they were sure it had actually happened. Pangs of regret, of course, that we couldn't be there. But we've spent the last two years saying, "look, why don't you just?" We are truly delighted for them. We can celebrate with them later ... whenever.

Meanwhile we had woken to the smell of sewage. In the space of an hour, very early, we had the emergency investigation by a specialist, confirmation  that the main drain had collapsed under the house, a visit from NFU Mutual, an offer of somewhere to stay, and authority from the insurers to get it done. We move out fast.

Just as well we weren't at the wedding which, at that moment, we didn't know was happening! That piece of news transformed an otherwise awful day.
