Breaking Dawn.....

......at 'The Chair'

A shot I've been wanting to get for quite some time, not sure I'm happy with this but its a start. There are some challenges that had to be met. The first is the most eerie part, spooky part and one I've kept putting off. It goes like this.....

Planned so sunrise is late, now rising at 7.48am plenty of time for security to open the gate to the road leading through tall dark pine trees, not a road I wanted to walk in darkness. But there is still a walk over the sand dunes and between some tall dark pine trees, the warm nor' wester wind rustles through the trees, there is no way I would hear anyone approaching - let alone a dog and its still dark. I walk quickly and briskly looking eagerly for the opening of the beach, I let out a sigh of relief as I spy the opening and see the vibrance along the horizon, its breath taking.

The chair stands in solitude looking out over the deserted beach, all I can hear is the wind in the trees, the rustle of the grasses and the waves calmly rolling in. A couple of gulls come gliding by and then a few race horses out for their morning training, up and down the beach they go as the sun begins to break the horizon. There is just a few fleeting minutes of strong golden light which puts 'The Chair' on fire and captures the seascape before ascending behind thick grey clouds, the sunrise and all of its magic is over for this day.

Our day has continued to have thick heavy grey clouds hovering over our small town, it is supposed to rain but not a drop has fallen.

Designed by Christchurch architect David Hall 'The Chair' won the 2011 Canterbury Architecture Award for the Small Project Architecture - a lifeguard tower, a piece of oversized beach furniture which acts as a working sculpture in the landscape.
