Decorated

New Year’s Eve plans were all changed when friends tested positive for COVID and, after a group discussion on WhatsApp, we all cancelled the planned party.  So, PY and I had an evening in on our own but we ate a lot of the food we had planned to cook, talked to friends and, later, Mum and Dad, on the phone and watched as many of the music programmes that we could find on TV. I did the usual first footing into the house at midnight: coal, matches bread and money in a bag. Let’s hope it brings good luck for 2022.

Today’s New Year’s Day walk was a five and half mile loop through Wimbledon Common into Wimbledon Village and down into Wimbledon itself. The map on my tracker app shows it as a nice loop.  A little wetter under foot that we imagined but still OK to walk.

On the piece of the Common near the entrance to Cannizzaro Park was this tree which somebody had decorated. I wonder how long it’s been like that and how long will last. I have visions of people partying near it last night.  A nice little thing to brighten up the afternoon.

In the evening we watched Don't Look Up, which seems to have been simultaneously released on Netflix and in some cinemas. We watched it on the sofa. The IMDB description says,

Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.

I’ve seen some mixed reviews: some can’t get to grips with it; some think it’s unsure of itself (satire or broad comedy) and others think it is a brilliant take on modern media.  I thoroughly enjoyed it but I didn’t think it was a classic in the making.
