A Day In The Life

Not Tuesday

Too bad it’s Wednesday because my shot today is in honor of tongue-out Tuesday :) If you haven’t a clue what I’m talking about, it’s okay, it’s an Instagram-ism. I don’t normally post the same bird within a day or two of each other but when there’s tongue, exceptions must be made! • This male red-bellied woodpecker was just about to leave after forcefully pecking the peanut butter suet balls; and then his tongue came out! Oh, so yummy good! • Their tongues are 3x the length of their bills and, when retracted, wrap around their heads between their skulls and skin. Yes, you read that right. Around their heads, and the tip rests inside their nostrils • They’re also able to slam their heads against a tree up to 15 mph to create holes for food, then use their long tongues to search deeply inside for small bugs and insects. Because of the sharp barbs covering their tongues they’re able to pierce the bug and pull it in to eat. Likely this is much tastier than my pb suet but it’s winter, so it’s second best! • The RBW Tongue Lesson has concluded for today. Thank you for being such good students • A+ for all :)
