WINTER AUTOCROSS

It's Winter Autocross at Road America and that's about as silly as it gets for Silly Saturday this early in the winter. Imagine taking your car to a race track and barreling around in the snow FOR TIME!

Three events were held for a crowd of over 100 drivers who were divided randomly into three groups. They did about 45 minutes at a station and then rotated to the next. All three stations were visited in the morning and then, after lunch, the same was done in the afternoon.

There were three classes of cars running, FWD, RWD and AWD/4WD.  The individual with the fastest overall time in each class won a trophy. And then they had to drive home.

Most arrive with a couple of sets of tires in the rear seat/trunk and then have to unload it all as it would not be allowed on the track. If they had to make a change, that was done in the paddock while the rest of each group kept on running.

Just about every type of car imaginable was there including the "family" car, some BMWs, 1 Ferrari and a dune buggy type (see Extra).  The dune buggy driver shows up every year...all three weekends during the winter and he usually cleans up. He's the only driver out there that really knows how to drive in snow. They made a mistake by plowing snow yesterday...and overnight wind polished it into glare ice causing all sorts of issues. New guy running it...I shall have to educate him.  THOU SHALT NOT PLOW A COURSE DESIGNED TO BE RUN IN SNOW!  DUH!
