Coming of age day

Celebrated on the 2nd Monday in January, Coming of Age Day is a national holiday in Japan and celebrates young people who reached the age of 20 in the previous year and is a celebration of adulthood.

The city is full of 20 year olds and their families, many in traditional dress. Visits to the shrine and special meals are the order of the day.
