Hellebore.

I grew up with this being called a "Lenten Rose".   I mean I literally grew up with it as it is a plant from home when we broke up the house after Dad died and Mum came to live with us.

Despite the colour of the buds, the flower is nothing like that.  It flowers, as you would expect of a Lenten Rose during spring, the flowers are a sort of greenish white.  It isn't a patch on the modern varieties.  We were told a few years ago that Hellebores were being bred to "hold up their heads" rather than the droop of the older vatieties.  With Diva which I blipped a while ago they seem to have achieved their aim.
