Happy birthday Les

Today is our dear friend Les’s birthday. Les’s roots are in the Yorkshire Dales. Last time we were there we went in search of his family graves in the churchyard of St Oswald’s church, Arncliffe in Littondale. Even in the pouring rain, the Littondale countryside is spectacular.

The chancel of the present St Oswald’s church rests on Norman foundations, but the first church could have been Saxon. The tower is 15th century and holds three bells, the oldest of which dates from about 1350 and still strikes on the hour. The church apart from the tower was rebuilt in 1796 in a style rather drearily called ‘Churchwarden Gothic’.
