Elizabeth Gaskell

Many Blippers will know of the Victorian novelist Mrs. Gaskell who lived from 1810 to 1865.
Among her best know works were Cranford, North and South and Wives and Daughters.
So what is her connection with this tower ?
Well this is Lindeth Tower in Silverdale, the neighbouring village to Arnside. It was built in 1842 and from the upper floors there are splendid views over Morecambe Bay. In the summers in the 1840s and 1850s Mrs. Gaskell, whose main home was in Manchester, used to come to stay in the Tower where she wrote several of her novels and stories.
It features as my Blip today because it is in the garden of the house of a good friend who kindly invited us for tea this afternoon.
