Treptower Park Soviet War Memorial

This is the impressive Soviet war memorial and burial ground in Treptow, East Berlin. While something impressive to anyone, to 4 out of our party of 7 it was especially interesting since we consisted of two historians, one political scientist and one landscape architect. The (falling) snow made it feel extra communist, somehow.
We were mainly concerned with the cult of personality of Stalin still on display here. There were twelve stone tablets with quotations from him about the war, accompanied by propagandic relief sculpture depicting heroic soviet soldiers et cetera. There were quite some flowers at the feet of the statues, so people still come to this place to commemorate. They probably do so because of the fact that some 5000 soldiers rest here at this shrine, regardless of the politically incorrect appearance.
