New to me.

In my perambulations around the village I am always on the look out for new plants and shubs in the gardens I pass by.
Today I found this attractive shrub which I don’t recall having seen before.
It is called Garrya elliptica. Its common name is the Silk-tassel bush.
It is native to the coastal regions of Oregon and California and grows up to 10ft. tall in the wild. It has tough leathery leaves. There are seperate male and female plants. This one is clearly a male as the hanging flowers are up to 10 inches long. Female flowers are just a couple of inches.
The cultivar “James Roof” has an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
It is apparently named after Nicholas Garry who was Secretary of the Hudson’s Bay Company from 1820-35.
