Entrenched

Walked the spaniel over Chailey Commons this morning. All of the Commons have visible traces of their role in military occupation during two world wars but the greatest density is on Romany Ridge which even has the remains of an army field kitchen from the Napoleonic wars. Here the ground is pockmarked with mortar firing pits from the Second World War and bisected by long lines of practise trenches from the First World War. Largely obscured by bracken in the summer, the trenches re-emerge as the vegetation dies down in winter. This one runs from the bottom right of the image, curving around to the top centre.
