Man Made

An afternoon at Moore nature reserve.

The lakes and reedbeds are formed from old sand and gravel pits - the whole place is entirely man made, although it all seems very wild now. There are extensive woodlands too, and a long defunct canal. To the north is the now closed Arpley landfill site, which itself will be restored, and to the south adjoining the Ship Canal “Port Warrington” which is more about trucks than boats. Strange structures indicate that underground there are some big services running through the southern edge of the reserve - possibly a pipeline (more research required). This part of the world hosts some major chemical industries.

It’s good for wildlife, some of it unusual. Some extensive meadows host coastal flora, which has adopted the very sandy terrain.
