Village Churchyard

I'm belatedly uploading my Wide Wednesday photo of something "man-made".

This is my village churchyard - home to the remains of and weather-worn stone memorials to men, women and children who have lived and died here through many centuries. Many of them will have been born here too, some will have helped to build the physical fabric of this village as well as its community. Beyond, a jumble of houses - not the most picturesque or oldest in the village, but among those originally built as social housing to ensure that it provides for the needs of its community. There are greenhouses too, where some of the many gardeners grow tomatoes and cucumbers and raise seedlings; some old fruit trees, and what seems to be, or have been, a workshop. Beyond, the Downs landscape too has been shaped by centuries of human intervention: it is enclosed, hedged, grazed or sown, and ancient hedgerows are rich with wildlife but kept in trim. People have invented and made many amazing things, but the creation of communities in which they live and work must be among the most important.
