The Secret Side

…… of Foulshaw Moss.

The Cumbria Wildlife Trust is running a series of visits throughout the year to discover parts of the Moss that are usually inaccessible to the public.

I had booked for this morning a little while ago. It’s always a risk, and today we were a bit unlucky - strong winds and rain all day.

A potential challenge for us as it was a group thing, but only nine people in all, and if you can’t distance and be safe on a bog on a very windy day - where can you ! J wore a mask, so she felt comfortable.

We.are setting off in the image, before turning into the wood and up and down a crag. The trust has cleared all the western hemlock and is encouraging the wood to revert to a broadleaf woodland. On the moss proper it’s all about water retention, and diversifying the habitat by creating scrapes and pools. The group ended up at a hide looking over a large scrape. We stayed outside to enjoy the wind and rain :-) Eventually we decided to retrace our steps in advance of the others. But we’ll come again in Spring if we can, it’s a wonderful site.,
