Laurencekirk Railway Station

5°C  -  20 mph SE Wind Speed  -  29 mph Gusts  -  Overcast.
Laurencekirk Station was opened on 1 November 1849 by the Aberdeen Railway which ran from Aberdeen in the north to Guthrie by Arbroath in the south. The station was closed in September 1967 as part of Beeching’s cost-cutting plans.  Beeching chaired a committee that produced the Beeching Report. The committee’s aim was to cut the debts being experienced by the then nationalised British Rail. As a result more than 2,300 stations were closed, mostly in rural areas.  The residents of Laurencekirk, many of whom commute to Aberdeen, successfully campaigned for the station to be reopened  -  it did take rather a long time for this to happen though!. The station was reopened on 18 May 2009. All the trains from Edinburgh, Glasgow and London to Aberdeen now stop at Laurencekirk, and there is even this two coach train between Montrose and Laurencekirk.  My main blip is that train  -  you can see what a miserable overcast day it is here! The extra is one of next-door's hens.
