Quod oculus meus videt

New Born

Monte Velho is not only a dressage centre, but also a stud farm.  Walking around first thing I came across 2 new born foals, along with a rowdy group of younger ‘teenagers’ grouped into one pasture.  They were quite friendly and inquisitive, coming up to me at the gate for some fuss.  It was more than could be said for the mares, who were very protective of their new foals.

The day was taken up watching the dressage lessons. For a completely uneducated person like me, it was useful to listen to the other riders explain how just small movements from the rider can instruct the horse to do different things. You begin to appreciate the work that goes in to producing a winning combination.  The guests were brilliant and you could see all of them improve with the lessons.

It was quite cool with a northerly wind cutting through the valley, but I still enjoyed sitting and watching as the day progressed.  L went out for a happy hack in the afternoon with a couple of other guests, before we retired to dinner.  Most of those who’d had lessons headed for bed after the meal; this riding must be very exerting!
