NOT BUFFALO....BISON!

Lot's of people call them buffalo......but truth be told, a true buffalo is a "water" animal (typically asian) and the bison is not. They are both closely related to cattle.

Bison (Bison bison) are easily distinguished from true buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) by anatomic means. Bison have humps on their shoulders...buffalo do not. Bison have very large heads...buffalo do not. Bison have beards...buffalo do not. It's horns are short and sharp...buffalo have larger horns.

If it's in the water...it's a buffalo.

This trio of grazers lives in Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota...between the grasslands and the badlands. Many of you Blippers seemed to enjoy yesterday's photo of the park so I thought I Blip another.
~
BTW.....bison can be very aggressive. It's best to keep a respectful distance.
