Monument

This 14 foot high triangular monument to Dr James Martineau and other members of the Martineau was erected in 1914 at the foot of the road to Loch-an-Eilean. The family lived for a while at the nearby Polchar. Dr Martineau was a philosopher, supporter of the Arts and Crafts movement and one time Principal of Manchester College. He was described as 'one of the most saintly men of the Victorian age. Each face of the monument was carved with Celtic designs by members of Aviemore Carving Class which was run by Dr Martineau and his sisters.
