Striped marsh frog

Striped marsh frogs are native to coastal areas of eastern Australia. Because we have a substantial pond and some smaller ponds with no fish to ensure tadpole survival, we have them in large numbers. Over the last few weeks they have been having a mating frenzy in which the males stick their heads above water, distending their throats and calling to attract females with a sound resembling two bits of hardwood being knocked together.

Now we have a lot of spawn, piles of froth with black spots being the eggs. This afternoon, a bit late in the day, there was only one visible frog and I feel lucky to have got a photo of it. I think their party is over.

Thanks for hosting JDO. Ribbit.
