Common Enchantments

1881

As part of our history tour on Daufuskie Island we visited this African American church established in 1881. The original church burned but when the rebuilt it was as close to the original. There are two doors in front...one for men and one for women.

The dark wooden building is a praise house that was built as a historical replica of the cabin the landowners had built for slaves to worship.

After the Civil War the freed slaves were given parcels to farm and live. These descendants are called Gullah or Geechee based on the area of Africa they were from.

I have a Gullah cookbook that has stories in the Gullah language about the history and the food they made.

Rain tomorrow so we are cramming as much as we can into the rest of the day.
