Skye Bridge

We have been going to Skye for many years. When we first used to go with the children the way across to north Skye was by ferry. It didn't take very long, but was a rather exciting way to start a holiday.

Then in 1992 a bridge was built and we were very impressed when we first saw it. We were not so impressed with the cost of driving over the bridge. Locals were certainly not happy. We remember the protests and a prolonged non-payment campaign. There were arrests and convictions. One Robbie the Pict was a colourful character in the fight.

It eventually became a political issue and the Scottish Parliament had to deal with it. I am not sure of the details, but in the end the bridge became toll-free and that's the situation today. Vehicles now come and go without giving it a thought.

A misty picture of the Misty Isle and the bridge.

So we are here in Portree. But not for long . . . we have a boat to catch tomorrow!
