Roll Out The Barrel

Passing a pub in Bloomsbury I saw for the first time the process of delivering beer into the cellar of a pub. In this case there wasn’t a chute and instead the beer was rolled to the hatch where it tumbled into the void landing on a mattress below. The drayman in the basement stood well back as it flew down through the air.

The operation needed some coordination. Otherwise the man at the receiving end could have a barrel land on his head.

An onlooking pub customer encouraged me to take the photo to show that the barrel roller was actually doing some work. I moved on and hope that the delivery was completed without a hitch.
