Fording the River Eden

The River Eden is wide at Appleby in Westmoreland and has carved a gorge through the New Red Sandstone. It's shallow in places and people have worked out where it's possible to ford the river, which this Landrover did while we were watching.

You can see where the shelf has been built up, slows the water down, then collapses into mini rapids. You need to know what you're doing if you cross here.

We passed a lovely day in Appleby and bought some Eden Creamery Brie, as well as visiting Grade I listed St Lawrence's Church in town. Appleby suffered substantially in the floods of 2015. Work is still going on to rectify the damage.

The Moot Hall, seat of the Council Chamber, is being refurbished.
