Steeple

Some keep the Sabbath going to Church –
I keep it, staying at Home –
With a Bobolink for a Chorister –
And an Orchard, for a Dome –

Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice –
I, just wear my Wings –
And instead of tolling the Bell, for Church,
Our little Sexton – sings.

God preaches, a noted Clergyman –
And the sermon is never long,
So instead of getting to Heaven, at last –
I’m going, all along.

Some keep the Sabbath going to Church (236), by Emily Dickinson

I pass this church in town just before arriving at work. It's in a very prominent location at the top of a hill, and I must admit the steeple is very impressive. It's directly across from the police station on one side and the courthouse on the other, with a graveyard in back. I have never been inside, though I believe the local chess club has begun meeting there since Covid shut down group activities at the local library.
