From the summit of Mellbreak

A second fine March day in the Lakes. We tackled two of the lower Wainwrights today, Mellbreak and Hen Comb. Lower they may be but the ascent was punishing. The climb up the north ridge of Mellbreak was relentless with some challenging scree.

The views from the north summit were spectacular as can be seen in todays blip where a group of walkers are enjoying the scenery with Loweswater in the background.

From the north summit we traversed the ridge to the higher south summit to bag the Wainwright. We descended back to the col turning left for the steep drop into Mosedale where we stopped for lunch.

Another steep and relentless climb alongside a fence took us up to the Hen Comb ridge turning left for the summit and second Wainwright.

It was all downhill from there back to Loweswater and the Kirkstile Inn which beckoned us even from the summit of Hen Coomb. A couple of pints of Loweswater Gold and a bowl of chips later we were suitably refreshed and on our way back to Keswick for our last evening. A bit of jamming ensued with guitar and ukulele.
