Binham Priory

M and I joined other members of the U3A Digital Photo Group for a photoshoot at Binham Priory this afternoon.  The Priory was founded in 1091 and was home to a Benedictine community of monks for over 400 years. Its history is one of almost continuous scandal. Many of its priors proved to be unscrupulous and irresponsible, and by the time of the priory’s suppression in 1539 the community had been reduced to just six monks. The nave of the priory church, with its striking 13th-century west front, remains in use as the local parish church (Church of St. Mary and the Holy Cross).

As you can see the weather was glorious, if a little bright for photos.  We also discovered that the farm next to the priory is home to the 'Little Dairy Shop', which is a brilliant self-serve shop (complete with an honesty box and vending machines) selling raw milk (which apparently has health benefits as none of the nutrients are depleted by heating and processing), from the farm's own cows, (so no food miles).  Some excellent Norfolk ice cream was also for sale, along with yogurt and cheese (including Mrs Temple's famous 'Binham Blue' , made in the neighbouring village of Wighton).  In addition they have a rather smart looking coffee machine too and the yogurt machine will also change notes or a credit card charge into change for the machines.   There is a small outdoor courtyard area with seating and even fresh water for dogs. Just brilliant!  We sat and enjoyed a delicious butterscotch ice cream sitting in the sunshine.  We didn't bargain on a passing bird leaving a 'gift' on M's back though!  Still...isn't it a sign of good luck?
